Spain Stocks Ceuta With Troops as Morocco Watches Social Media Calls for a Second Border Invasion

Seventy-two thousand illegal aliens did not “migrate” into Ceuta last month. They stormed it.

On July 30 the Spanish enclave on Morocco’s northern coast—home to roughly 84,000 people—was overwhelmed in hours. Young men swam around breakwaters, climbed fences, and poured through any gap they could find. At least 96 died in the crush and the water. Most of the rest eventually trudged back when they discovered there was no open door to mainland Spain and no free housing waiting.

About 5,000 remain.

Now the same voices on social media are calling for round two. Saturday. Spain’s national holiday. The message is clear: the border can be broken again if enough people simply show up.

Spain and Morocco are not taking the chance. Soldiers patrol Ceuta’s commercial districts and government buildings. Extra police line the main avenues. On the Moroccan side, black-clad security forces walk the beaches of Fnideq, the main launch point for the July rush.

Morocco’s Interior Ministry says it has arrested several people for circulating the online calls and is treating the incitement as a criminal act. Spain has already strung floating barriers in the water where thousands swam across last time.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska put it bluntly during a visit to the enclave: none of the remaining illegal aliens will stay in Ceuta, none will be allowed to reach the Iberian Peninsula, and none will receive legal status except in the rarest cases of extreme vulnerability. Asylum claims are being screened. The vast majority are being rejected.

That is the official line. The deeper problem remains. A Spanish Supreme Court ruling earlier this summer held that migrants who arrive by sea cannot be immediately returned without process. Traffickers and online agitators seized on the decision.

Moroccan border controls visibly loosened in the days leading up to the July 30 surge. Spanish intelligence sources later concluded Morocco did not plan the invasion but allowed it to happen. Whether as leverage, distraction, or simple negligence, the result was the same: a Spanish city was flooded.

This is what weak signals produce. When courts and governments treat national borders as optional, the message travels faster than any official statement. Young men in Morocco saw videos of the first rush, heard the rumors of open gates, and answered. Now the same channels are buzzing again.

Europe has seen this movie before. Ceuta and Melilla are the European Union’s only land borders with Africa. Every time those barriers crack, the political earthquake reaches far beyond the enclave.

Italy briefly suspended Schengen. France reinforced its own border with Spain. Far-right parties across the continent gained new ammunition. The left’s preferred language—migrants, asylum seekers, humanitarian crisis—collapses under the weight of 72,000 people crashing a city of 84,000 in a single day.

Scripture does not treat national boundaries as man-made inconveniences. “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.” Acts 17:26.

God set the bounds. Governments that refuse to defend them invite disorder, death, and the slow erosion of the very societies that claim to care about human dignity.

Spain is now doing what it should have done before the first rush: putting soldiers on the street, barriers in the water, and clear public statements that illegal entry will not be rewarded. Morocco is, for the moment, cooperating. Whether that holds when the next online campaign gathers force is an open question.

The people of Ceuta already know what happens when the line fails. The rest of Europe—and anyone still pretending borders are outdated—would do well to pay attention.
