9/11 Cancer Cases Explode 1680% as Survivors Overtake First Responders

The towers came down in two hours. The dying has not stopped for twenty-five years.

New figures compiled by the World Trade Center Health Program and reported in a New York Post show certified 9/11 cancers jumping from 3,204 in 2015 to 57,044 this year. That is a 1,680 percent surge in a decade, and it is not slowing as the nation marks the grim anniversary of the attacks.

Here is the part that should knock the wind out of anyone still treating Ground Zero as a closed chapter. For the first time, civilian survivors now outnumber first responders on the cancer rolls. Downtown residents, office workers, and people who lived, worked, or went to school near The Pile account for 28,913 certified cases, up 4,066 percent from 694 in 2015. Firefighters, police, and other responders sit at 28,131.

The men who ran toward the fire are still getting sick. So are the people who were told to go back to work.

They Tasted the Fuel and Were Told to Breathe

Leslie Lane was 51 when the planes hit. She worked for Merrill Lynch in the World Financial Center, across from the towers. She evacuated through the dust cloud, then came back downtown that November.

You could taste the dust. You could taste the fuel, greasy gas. For months afterward, you could taste the fuel in the air in the back of your throat and mouth. They kept telling us the air was safe. I don’t think it was.

In 2020, a routine checkup found thymus cancer, a tumor so uncommon it accounts for fewer than 1 percent of cancers in the general population. Lane does not drink. She does not smoke. Surgeons at Memorial Sloan Kettering took the tumor. It has not come back. She is 76 now, and she has no doubt what she inhaled.

The World Trade Center Health Program now lists 82 thymus cancers among the 9/11 cohort. There are 591 neuroendocrine tumors, which jumped 6 percent between March and June among survivors alone. There are 188 cases of male breast cancer. Brain cancers sit at 163, up 14 cases, or 9 percent, in a single quarter.

James Ryan, a 65-year-old electrician who helped light The Pile and rewire the PATH station under the wreckage, found blood in his urine at a regular exam. An MRI caught pancreatic cancer early. Part of the pancreas came out in 2019. “I got very lucky,” he said.

Luck, in this story, means the scan came in time. Attorney Michael Barasch, whose firm represents thousands of program members, put the tempo in brutal terms.

Sadly, we lose roughly two clients a day and see a new cancer certification every 50 minutes. 9/11 did not end on 9/11. The cancer clock is ticking 24/7.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.

The Death Toll Has Already Tripled

At least 9,425 people are now dying from post-9/11 illnesses. That is more than triple the 2,977 lives stolen on September 11, 2001. CDC data through June show 145,275 current members in the health program. Sixty-seven percent of them are certified for at least one of 69 cancers linked to those toxins, far above the National Cancer Institute’s roughly 40 percent lifetime cancer figure for Americans overall.

Skin, prostate, breast, thyroid, lung, bladder, lymphoma, and leukemia still dominate the common list. The rare ones are the tell. You do not get a cluster of thymus tumors, male breast cancers, and neuroendocrine cases by coincidence and old age. You get them when a city block is pulverized into a chemical cloud of pulverized concrete, jet fuel, asbestos, heavy metals, and God knows what else, then officials send civilians back into it.

Then-EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman stood in front of cameras and told New York the air was safe. First responders have been repeating that betrayal for a generation. A 2025 Post report quoted retired officers who heard the same line while passing buckets that sometimes held a hand.

The students were in the zone too. Stuyvesant High School. Borough of Manhattan Community College. Pace. Elementary and middle schools. Many of those children are now adults in their thirties and forties, just old enough for the latency window to open. The program is still begging people who were young in 2001 to find out if they qualify.

Most of the Exposed Civilians Are Not Even in the Program

Only about 15 percent of civilians who breathed that air have enrolled. That is the quiet scandal sitting underneath the 57,044 figure. The certifications are exploding among the people who found the program. The people who never enrolled are getting the same cancers without the monitoring that caught Lane and Ryan in time.

Barasch is blunt about that part. Early detection is the difference between life and death. The James Zadroga Act built a system that actually works when people use it. Enrollees see lower cancer-specific mortality than comparable New York patients. Congress has had to keep shoring up the money because the caseload will not politely decline. Latency for some of these diseases runs twenty to sixty years. Mesothelioma’s worst wave has not even arrived.

So the anniversary speeches will come. The names will be read. The politicians will look solemn for a morning. And somewhere in the city a new cancer certification will land about every fifty minutes, on a secretary who went back to her desk in November 2001, or a kid who went back to class while the pile still burned.

The hijackers murdered 2,977 people in a single morning. The dust they left behind is still collecting the rest. Remember the dead of that day. Then remember the living who were told the air was fine.
